ITINERARY Day 1: Johannesburg On arrival at Johannesburg Int. Airport, you will be welcomed by our local representative who will explain the details of the tour to you. He or she will also hand you the route, project descriptions & necessary contact details. From here you will be transferred to Lilogo Lodge situated in Rosebank, where you will staying for the next 2 nights. Lilogo Lodge has adopted a green and socially responsible approach to its operations.
Day 2 : Soweto Fair-trade Tour (5 hours) This FTTSA (Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa) accredited tour starts with a glimpse of the Baragwanath Hospital and Kliptown where the Freedom Charter was adopted in 1955. We will visit the Hector Pietersen Memorial and Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize laureates have lived - Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela. After this introduction you will visit one of the Soweta-based community projects, depending on the day and time of your visit. After this you will explore parts of the township on a bicycle tour and, to impress your friends, you will learn some Tsotsi Taal (a slang originally used by gangsters). Also included in the bicycle tour are a visit to a day care centre and a hostel. After lunch you will be transferred to your hotel where you can relax and look back on an interesting and original Soweto experience.
Day 3: Johannesburg – Waterberg / Vaalwater Today you will travel to the unspoiled Limpopo Province where you will enter the malaria free Waterberg Biosphere Reserve. Here you will stay at the eco-friendly 24Riviere Private Game Farm. Here back to basic and luxury go hand-in-hand. Enjoy a sundowner on your veranda while watching the wildlife gather at the waterhole.
Day 4: Waterberg to Hoedspruit Today you travel through the majestic beauty of the Magoebaskloof. Stop in the town of Tzaneen where you can visit the quaint local museum and the world-renowned Modjadji Cycad Nature Reserve. Here you can enjoy a drink in a 6,000 year old Baobab tree before you make your way to the Ottersden River Lodge in Hoedspruit. The eco-friendly accommodation is made of natural materials and offers sweeping river views. A great place to spend the night two nights!
Day 5: Kruger National Park Today you enter Orpen Gate to the famous Kruger National Park, Big 5 Country! Can you spot the elephant, lion, rhino, leopard and buffalo? If you want to be kind to both planet and your own comfort, you can also join a guided game drive or a very exciting bush hike with trained rangers. Spend another night at the Ottersden Lodge.
Day 6: Bulembu, Swaziland Today you drive the scenic road to the tiny kingdom of Swaziland. After customs you will make your way to the Bulembu ghost town. What used to be a mining village, is now a very exciting community-run project. Here you can stay at the Bulembu Lodge where you will be treated to traditional Swazi dancing. Everything in the village is based on self-sustainability. Glass is collected to be re-used in the nearby glass factory and a local lady provides the free range/organic eggs and poultry.
Day 7: Bulembu – Hlane Royal National Park On your way to Swaziland’s capital Mbabane, make sure that you stop at Swazi Secrets – a project run to support women in the rural areas. You overnight in the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary. Depending on your tour choice you will stay in traditional grass-dome shaped beehives or a unique hilltop lodge. Here you can book optional excursions to discover Swaziland: guided game-drives, mountain bike tours or horse rides.
Day 8: Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary – Eshowe Cross the border to South Africa again, travel through the sugarcane fields of Zululand. Make your way to Ekuthuleni which is situated in the uMhlathuzana district. This area was once the head quarters of the mighty King Shaka’s empire. Here you will stay at the Ekuthuleni Home Stay. The name means place of peace, a fitting name for the venue that is situated on a hill overlooking a sparsely populated valley. Like most homes in this area Ekuthuleni brings you back to basic: without running water or electricity. You will sleep in traditional huts in a ‘musi’ or family homestead.
Day 9: Isimangaliso (St Lucia) Today you will spend another day at the traditional homestead and its surroundings. Optionally you can drive to the Isimangaliso (St Lucia) estuary for a boat trip and some sightseeing. Spend another night at the Ekuthuleni Home Stay. When morning comes you will leave as a friend.
Day 10: to Durban After your goodbyes you will drive to Durban, the largest city of the vast and varied KwaZulu-Natal province. If time permits you can make another optional stop at the Phezulu Cultural Village and Safari Park in Botha’s Hill. This offers panoramic views of an area aptly named the Valley of a 1000 Hills. Let the Gasa clan treat you to their cultural show of dance and story telling. Learn about the Zulu culture and tradition before you make your way to the 4-star eco friendly Mackaya Bella Guest House which has an indigenous garden that is in itself a real attraction!
Day 11: Durban to Bergville/Drakensberg On your way to Bergville stop at Howick, situated in the heart of the Midlands. It is known as the place of many waterfalls for it is here that the uMngeni River and its tributaries tumble down gorges and over precipices on a journey to the Indian Ocean, some 95 km to the east. Three Trees is a small luxury lodge, nestled in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains, overlooking the Spioenkop Game Reserve. All the food used at the lodge is sourced locally, some herbs and vegetables are grown on site.
Day 12: Bergville Today you can relax at the lodge or participate in one of the many activities the lodge has to offer such as guided bush walks, mountain biking, birding, battlefield tours, horse riding or you can just enjoy the scenery as this lodge has been described as “Quintessential Africa!”
Day 13: Bergville to Durban Airport After a late breakfast make your way towards Durban airport. Your tour ends here. If you want to extend your holiday or combine your trip with any of our other products, we will gladly assist you.
