ITINERARY Day 1: Johannesburg to Drakensberg We start off this tour heading south, on to the breathtaking Drakensberg. This mountain range forms the natural border with the kingdom of Lesotho. After arrival we can explore the area, before we get to know each other during our first group dinner.
Day 2: Drakensberg A full day in the mountains. Use this day to explore the Drakensberg by foot or on horseback (optional). There are many hiking trails, ranging from a 1-hour walk to a full day hike. There is the option of a game drive on horseback through the Spioenkop Nature Reserve (optional).
Day 3: Drakensberg to Battlefields A short distance to travel, but we travel a long way back in time! When we visit the battlefields, we go back to the 19th century. A real melting pot of colonial clashes occurred here - the “Boers” and the British, the Boers and the Zulus and the Zulus and the British all fought for land control. Depending on where we visit determines the particular point o history we will experience.
Day 4: Battlefields to Umhlanga A beautiful journey through KwaZulu Natal while we make our way to the coast. We stop at a wine farm (optional wine tasting), the Howick waterfall and travel through the Valley of a 1000 Hills. By the end of the afternoon we arrive at our hotel in Umhlanga, a lovely beach town near Durban.
Day 5: Umhlanga to Hluhluwe Our journey North goes through the sugarcane fields towards the beautiful area around Hluhluwe. This afternoon we can relax at the lodge or view the small 5 on a safari by bicycle! For those who would like to be part of a South African cooking experience, tonight is the night! Join the local chef with the preparation of a true South African dinner.
Day 6: Hluhluwe/St. Lucia We get up early in order to have the best chance of spotting animals during our 4x4 game drive in the Umfolozi Game Reserve, which is known for its large white rhino population. In the afternoon we visit the town of St. Lucia where we can go on an optional boat cruise through the wetlands, a UNESCO world heritage site.
Day 7: Hluhluwe to Swaziland Since today is Sunday, we offer you the possibility to sing and clap with the locals during an African church service. We leave South Africa for 2 days and enter the small kingdom of Swaziland. Encounter the unique culture of these friendly people as we visit the local market and the famous glass factory.
Day 8: Swaziland Today can be spent in the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, exploring Swaziland’s gorgeous nature. Or we can visit a rural village nearby (optional).
Day 9: Swaziland to Hazyview Driving through Swaziland, we visit a Swazi cultural village (show included), before re-entering South Africa. We travel to our final lodge just outside the famous Kruger National Park where you can either relax at the lodge or go on an optional evening game drive.
Day 10: Kruger A full day in the Kruger National Park. We get up early and go on a game drive in our vehicle. Keep your eyes open and your camera ready for the Big 5 and other animals such as giraffe, hippo and all sorts of antelopes. Optional you could also choose to spend this day in a 4x4 open vehicle. Overnight in Hazyview.
Day 11: Hazyview to Hoedspruit Today we travel the famous Panorama Route and explore the spectacular sightings of the Blyde River Canyon, God’s Window and Bourke’s Luck Potholes (entry included). In Pilgrim’s Rest, we might even strike gold during our gold digging adventure (optional). Overnight in Hoedspruit area.
Day 12: Hoedspruit The true animal lovers can spend another day in Kruger (optional). One can also do this on foot during an optional bush walk either in a private game reserve or in Kruger. A visit to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre can also be booked. Overnight in Hoedspruit area.
Day 13: Hoedspruit to Johannesburg After breakfast we travel through Mpumalanga back to the place where we started from: Johannesburg.
