Southern Africa Travel Guide

Bird Island

Country: South Africa
Region: West Coast
Bird Island in Lambert's Bay is the only Cape gannet colony in the world that’s accessible by foot. During the breeding months (September to March) there are over 15 thousand gannets. The distinct “kara-kara-kara” sounds they produce are overwhelming and so is the aroma of guano, but the sight is unforgettable. In the background lies a colony of Cape fur seals - a boat trip takes you there.

TESTIMONIAL

Our two nights on the secluded zambezi island were out of this world, something we will never forget. The houseboat trip was about as relaxing as you get, with great tiger fishing being an added bonus. A real African experience I had very high expectations and they were easily surpassed !!!
