Do you speak football? |
|
|
Here are some essential words for football fans visiting South Africa (we say soccer by the way): Bafana Bafana The nickname for South Africa's national side, meaning "The Boys" Banyana Banyana Nickname for South Africa's women's team, meaning, you guessed it, "The Girls" Bazooka A kind of shot that is quite self explanatory. Diski Township slang for football. Laduma This cheer literally means 'it thunders' in Zulu and rolls down the stadium everytime a goal is scored. So when your favorite team scores stand up and shout from the top of your longues: "laaaa-dooo-maaaaa"! Makarapa This cheerful hard hat, decorated with team colors and logos, is standard gear for football fans in South Africa. Shibobo Is to fool an opponent by passing the ball between his legs. Table Mountain A skillful move in which the ball is balanced on the neck of a player. Vuvuzela long, usually plastic, air horn that is blown by football fans all over South Africa. Its sound is rather overwhelming to say the least. Also sometimes referred to by its Setswana name "lepatata". |
