Zambian Kwacha (ZMK)

Country: Zambia
The name of this currency is derived from the word “dawn” in the local languages Nyanja and Bemba. A few years after the independence in 1964, it replaced the British Pound as Zambia’s official currency. Officially one kwacha consists of a 100 cents called ngwee, meaning “bright”. Although one shouldn’t worry too much about having a pocket full of Zambian coins. Most trade is done with bank notes starting at 50 up to 50 thousand kwacha. Exhange rate (January 2010): 1GBP=7,481 ZMK; 1 EUR= 6,680 ZMK; 1 USD=4,635 ZMK; 1 ZAR=630 ZMK
