Southern Africa Travel Guide

Sir Lowry's Pass

This pleasant, tarred mountain pass on the N2 takes you from Somerset West in the Winelands to the Overberg Whale Coast. it offers magnificent views over Gordon's Bay. Driving past the fertile Elgin Valley, near Grabouw, you will pass many orchards full of apple, pear and plum trees. Near the Steenbras Dam there is a public hiking trail that shows you the ruts of ox wagons that used to have much more trouble crossing the early pass and are now declared a national monument.
